As well having an impact in the community teaching English, HOOP cares about the children’s families and helps them with keeping healthy, parenting, psychological and general wellbeing.
I decided to join HOOP because of the great experience my older sister had here. I was originally looking for a volunteer experience in Africa because it is my dream to use my photography skills and take care of animals there. But, I ended up having an amazing time in Peru! Working with HOOP is one of the most beautiful choices I have ever made.
Although we are a school, we are so much more than that. As well having an impact in the community teaching English, HOOP cares about the children’s families and helps them with keeping healthy, parenting, psychological and general wellbeing. The most important things for me are tiny things that make a big difference, like how to share with the people you love and not to throw rubbish everywhere!
Ironically, before I came to HOOP I didn’t really like kids! But after I met the HOOP children, I realised that there is still pure love in this world, regardless of what we can offer each other. Every time the children ran to me and hugged me, I felt so loved and worthwhile. And I felt that they loved me not because of what I did for them, but because of who I am.
Living in Arequipa was crazy! I had never been abroad for so long by myself, and I never expected I would make so many good friends there from different countries. The weather is also crazy, in the morning you can just wear a tank top, but at night you need to wrap up warm! The food is awesome and you have to try and learn how to dance salsa and bachata in Arequipa.
I would recommend HOOP as an experience if you feel lost, maybe you don’t know what you want to study, or you don’t know what your next step should be. Come to HOOP to help figure it out! It might not help you find answers, but you will have so much fun and you will learn a lot from the kids.
